Vic: Kids to protest at "unsafe" school crossing

A group of schoolchildren, dressed as cars, will protest at the scene of a terrible
accident in an attempt to get their school crossing upgraded.

St Kilda Primary School children will parade back-and-forth across the Brighton Road
crossing from 8.30am (AEST) today after a 13-year-old girl lost her arm in June when she
was hit by a tram.

JULIE SHIELS, a member of the Brighton Road Crossing Committee, says parents, the school
and the local council have all been pushing for more than a year for the crossing to be
fixed.

Ms SHIELS says parents were originally concerned that it took two traffic light changes
to cross the road opposite St Kilda Primary, with those caught in the middle of the road
in danger of being hit by trams which have right of way.

Since the accident, VicRoads has changed the traffic light sequencing to allow pedestrians
to cross the road in one change of lights between 8.30am and 9am, but without introducing
tram controls.

Ms SHIELS says people still risk being hit by trams which are not required to stop
when the green man is flashing.
