The Albany chapter of the American Red Cross is asking for donations to house, clothe and feed 18 people left homeless by a fire early Saturday that damaged three Broad Street apartment buildings.
The five families, including eight children and an elderly couple, are staying with friends and relatives, said Lee Eliot, spokesman for the Red Cross.
The organization expects to pay about $6,500 to provide basic goods and furniture, and for the first month's rent on new apartments.
"We will take care of the (families) whether or not the public helps us," Eliot said.
