QLD: Key witness under attack over political past

Key election rorts witness LEE BERMINGHAM has faced a personal attack on his political
past from Labor lawyers while linking disgraced former Queensland Labor MP BILL D'ARCY
to the state's most powerful union boss.

The Shepherdson Inquiry into electoral fraud heard that Mr BERMINGHAM, who was sacked
from his post of Labor state organiser, was a former Communist Party member and anarchist
before switching to the right arm of the ALP.

Mr BERMINGHAM denied bullying and sexually pressuring Young Labor members to take part
in electoral rorting.

The former AWU factional member told the inquiry he failed to renew his factional membership
in 1996 when elements of the faction started to copy One Nation views in a bid to win
back traditional ALP supporters.

In other evidence Mr BERMINGHAM said jailed child sex offender D'ARCY was rescued from
a suspect pre-selection battle at the last state election by Australian Workers' Union
state boss BILL LUDWIG, who managed to get it stopped.

The inquiry is continuing.
