COMMUNITY COALITION, FLEET OFFICIALS TO MEET.(BUSINESS)

ALBANY Community development activists will descend upon Albany today to meet privately with officials of Fleet Financial Group Inc., in hopes of securing investment commitments for poor and minority neighborhoods before the bank merges with Shawmut National Corp.

The local coalition, called the Capital District Community Economic Development Network, will ask the bank for more than $44 million for targeted home mortgages, micro-business loans, job training and community projects.

Majeedah Azzaq, a Citizen Action of New York coordinator in Binghamton, said New York groups are hoping for as good a response from Fleet as Connecticut and Massachusetts received, even though they don't have the backing of any major political figure as the others did.
